Brenda Leeuwenberg – Project Director, NZ On Screen

“In the early-‘90s, I was a PhD student in Agrisearch and I used to use Usenet groups to find communities of interest around the world. There were a few select other people studying sheep reproduction who were my friends. I also used to use them as a way of connecting with the world. It was Netscape Version 1.0 days, well Mosaic actually, so Web pages were pretty limited. I remember looking at the Web page for the US government and thinking, “That’s so cool!”. I was using the Usenet groups to talk about work but also there were the more social chat groups that were really bizarre. I got into it from there.”
